Vertical Markdown Editor: Guide

Intent
Write Markdown and preview vertical-writing typesetting in real time, with split, Markdown-only, and vertical-only layouts, automatic local saves, and .md file import/export.
What it does
Renders a single Markdown document as polished vertical-writing typesetting using the TATEmd engine, and lets you switch between side-by-side, Markdown-only, and vertical-only layouts.
Key features
Split / Markdown / Vertical layouts, Real-time vertical preview, Draggable split size, Local auto-save, .md open and save, Copy to clipboard, Character count
Privacy
Everything runs locally in your browser. Text and layout settings are auto-saved to LocalStorage and never uploaded.
Best for
  • Writing novels, essays, and manuscripts in Japanese that read top-to-bottom, right-to-left
  • Checking how a Markdown draft will look as vertical typesetting before exporting
  • Anyone who wants an in-browser vertical-writing Markdown editor with no sign-in
Why this tool
  • Single Markdown state shared by all three layouts, so switching never loses your draft
  • Built on TATEmd's pure vertical-typesetting renderer, so the preview matches proper tategaki typesetting
  • Local-only: auto-save, file open/save, and copy all happen without uploading

How to use

  1. 1Write or paste Markdown in the editing pane.
  2. 2Use the Split / Markdown / Vertical controls in the toolbar to switch layouts.
  3. 3Drag the divider in Split mode to resize the editor vs the vertical preview.
  4. 4Press Esc in a full layout to return to Split view.
  5. 5Open a .md file, save your draft as .md, or copy the Markdown to the clipboard.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting arbitrary HTML inside Markdown to render (raw HTML stays disabled for safety).
  • Resizing the divider on a mobile device (mobile falls back to Edit / Preview tabs).
  • Closing the browser tab before the local auto-save runs (it saves within a second of typing).
